Magamba Forest
The Usambara mountains are one of the top destinations for hiking in East Africa and the “Magamba forest” is one of the most spectacular hikes in this area. The tour can be done on its own or in combination with the “Irente View Point” tour. We also offer customized options, please contact us in case you are interested.
This tour will take you on an uphill walk from Lushoto to the Magamba rain forest. On the way you will learn about the culture and traditions of the Shambaa tribe.
The Magamba rain forest is rich in vegetation, colorful birds and butterflies. You will have the chance to encounter the two horned chamaleon, endemic to the West Usambara mountains. Although this is not guaranteed our guides are experts at spotting Chamaleons. There is also the chance to find Colobus monkeys. There will be a visit to a historical cave which is believed to have been used during world war I.
This beautiful Usambara mountains trekking day will culminate by ascending to the Kigulu Hakwewa peak in the middle of the Magamba forest at about 1840 meters above sea level.
Lunch will be served at this point and you will have some time to enjoy the view before heading back to your lodge in Lushoto town.
