Shambaa is a word of Bantu origin that means “farming”. The Shambaa people are an ethnic group original from the Usambara mountains, and many of them live in the Lushoto area.

The Usambara mountains are the most fertile region in Tanzania and very rich in a variety of vegetables and spices. The Shambaa cuisine is mainly made of roots and vegetables and they have some dishes specific to this area.

The tour your will start at your hotel where you will be picked up at around 9:30 in the morning and you will walk through local villages to the family where you will be invited to cook and eat with, while learning the names and ingredients of some traditional Shambaa dishes.

You will be accompanied by a local guide who will translate you from the Shambaa language to English and will assist you in all the process.
